If you’ve asked a technician why your aircon isn’t cooling, you may have heard the term “system reprocess.” Some people hear it and wonder if it’s just a fancy name for a more expensive service. It isn’t. It’s the proper way to fix a system that has lost refrigerant, and it’s what we do instead of just adding freon.
Here’s what it is and why it matters for your aircon.
What is system reprocess?
System reprocess is a full reset of your aircon’s refrigerant system. Instead of topping up what’s missing, we fix the cause of the problem, clean out the inside of the system, and refill it with the exact amount of refrigerant it was designed to hold.
Think of it like changing the oil in a car properly instead of just topping it up with whatever’s on hand. The result is a system that runs the way it was built to.
The steps of a proper system reprocess
1. Leak testing. We pressurize the system with nitrogen and check the coils, pipes, and connections to find exactly where the refrigerant is escaping. Nitrogen is used because it’s dry and safe, and the pressure makes even small leaks easier to find.
2. Leak repair. Once the leak is found, we fix it by re-flaring a loose connection, replacing a damaged section of pipe, or brazing the leaking spot. Without this step, any new refrigerant will just escape again.
3. Vacuuming. We use a vacuum pump to pull the air and moisture out of the entire system. This step is what separates a proper job from a quick top-up.
4. Holding test. After vacuuming, we check that the system holds its vacuum. If it holds, there are no leaks left. If it doesn’t, we know there’s still a problem to fix.
5. Precise recharging. We charge the system with the exact amount of refrigerant the manufacturer specifies for your unit, measured by weight and not guessed.
6. Performance check. Finally, we check pressures and temperatures to confirm the unit is cooling properly.
Why vacuuming matters
Your aircon’s refrigerant system is meant to be sealed and clean inside. When it’s opened or when a leak develops, air and moisture get in, and both cause trouble:
- Moisture can mix with the refrigerant and oil and form acids inside the system. Over time, this damages the compressor, which is the most expensive part of your aircon.
- Air takes up space in the system and raises its pressure, so the unit has to work harder and cools less.
Simply adding freon on top of air and moisture leaves these problems in place. Vacuuming removes them.
When does an aircon need a system reprocess?
- Your aircon is not cooling or cooling weakly, and low refrigerant is the cause
- A refrigerant leak has been found and repaired
- Your unit was relocated or reinstalled
- The compressor or another major part was replaced
- The system has been opened for repair
- You’ve had repeated freon top-ups and the cooling keeps fading
If your unit is near the ocean, a creek, canal, or river, or close to salons or factories, leaks are more likely because humidity and chemical fumes slowly corrode the coils. For these units, proper leak testing and reprocess are especially worth doing.
Is it worth it compared with just adding freon?
A freon top-up costs less at the start, but if there’s a leak, the aircon stops cooling again within weeks or months and you pay again. A system reprocess costs more at first, but it fixes the actual problem, protects your compressor, and gives you cooling that lasts. Over time, it’s usually the cheaper choice.
Know what you’re paying for
If a technician offers to add freon without checking for leaks or vacuuming the system, ask why your aircon lost refrigerant in the first place, because a fix that skips the cause rarely lasts.
